Boundless Gratitude: Songs of the month

Eleanor Roosevelt's Time

(Boundless Gratitude)
2008-05-03
Music and lyrics by Hassaun Ali Jones-Bey (ASCAP), copyright 2008
A musical meditation on then and now. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's recorded on the Acoustic Light CD.
In Eleanor Roosevelt’s time
People stood in bread lines
And color lines were deadly
All around the world
Scientists raced for atom bombs
Nations waged genocide
And racial segregation
Was the law of the land
So many things seemed wrong
Almost like today
Maybe it’s always been this way
But Eleanor lived like the sage who said:

Chorus:
It’s better to light a light
Than to curse the darkness
It’s better to light a candle
Than to toss in your sleep
It’s better to shine your light
Than to curse the darkness
Come on, take my hand and
Light a light with me
Come on, take my hand and
Light your light with me
Come on, take my hand and
Shine your light with me

An American soldier told
Congressmen that business leaders
Were plotting a coup on the
Roosevelt presidency
The story held some truth
But inquiry was dropped
A full report was not released
And the whole thing was forgotten
So many things seemed wrong
Almost like today
Maybe it’s always been this way
But Eleanor lived like the sage who said:

Chorus

Eleanor must have cried
Over her husband’s affairs
And when disease without a cure
Confined him to a wheelchair
Where he and she won
Four races for president
Led us through depression, war
And more progressive social change
Than ever before
That’s why…

Chorus
